$5 Cover

Hustle and Flow and Black Snake Moan's Craig Brewer is making a docudrama webseries called $5 cover here in Memphis.  I've seen the grip and lighting trucks and art department trucks parked outside of many locations throughout town and the excitement is plain.

Since seeing my Chicken Boy posters, stickers and tshirts onset and on characters in Harold and Kumar go to White Castle I've wanted to become more active in getting my stuff in films and I think my chance to do so might have arrived.

While I was DJing for a show at a local visual art venue, my friend Tommy Kha introduced me to the head of the art department working on $5 cover. She took my card and shook my hand as the Bar-kay's Move your Boogie Body got the people to, well, move their boogie bodies.  Shortly after our meet, she contacted me about printing some crew gifts for the show's workers (I've learned that no matter if its a tv show, a movie, a webseries or whatever, people in the biz refer to the project as 'a show').

A couple days later, having seen the work I did for the crew gifts, the wardrobe designer for the show (see how in the loop I am, using all the terminology and such) asked if i could recreate a band shirt from Brewer's favorite 80's punk band, the Gories.  I came back at her with a version of the shirt the band had actually produced as well as a couple options using their album covers.  Although he opted for the redo of the shirt the band put out, I think that she liked having some alternates presented.

It seems that this movie work is all about fast turnaround, I guess decisions are often made and remade until the last minute.  I only had one day to recreate the artwork and print the shirt, and when I delivered the shirts to set on the day of shooting the costumer took it from me and immediately began cutting it up and attaching safety pins and then fitted it on the actor.  She looked great in it after all the on-the-fly modifications.

Yep.  I think i wanna do more of this work alright.  Good money for fast turnaround one-off tshirts...I can do that.
